Poodle Problems - How To Deal With Poodle Biting Problems

Poodles look like lovely, cute fluffy toys, but they are a living creature with a specific personality and unfortunately, poodle problems are associated with them.

Poodle biting is a burden every mature poodle owner needs to deal with. If you permit your poodle to bite as a puppy, that behavior will progress into adulthood, with potentially terrible consequences for you and your dog.

Dog bites can be very dangerous and are reportable to the police, so poodle problems such as poodle biting need to be stopped before your poodle gets into serious trouble.

The Reasons for Poodle Biting

Poodles have a reputation for biting as opposed to other dog breeds. The miniature and toy poodle look to be particular culprits as compared with the standard poodle. Commonly speaking, poodles should be a well-behaved and non-aggressive breed of dog.

So why the poodle biting? Poodles are highly intelligent and were traditionally used as hunting dogs. The name poodle comes from the word ‘puddle’ in German. They were used as water dogs who would swim out into a lake or river to retrieve game.

Boredom is one of the reasons that dogs will bite. The smarter they are, the more they can become bossy, obstinate, or simply refuse to do as they are commanded. If the owner then aims to discipline them, poodle biting can result.

Ending Poodle Biting in Puppies

Miniature and toy poodles are both little, so they can be controlled and trained by their owner with a view to halting poodle biting before it ever starts.

First, the poodle puppy must be socialized from the time it is eight weeks old and allowed to meet with various dogs, once it has had its shots. It should not be weaned from its mother in advance of that time because it will not understand how to interact with the pack and not bite.

It will also not learn how to stop acting like a dominant alpha dog outside of the pack of mother and other puppies. If it thinks it is dominant, poodle problems such as biting will be the common result.

Once your poodle puppy has been given its shots, it can meet other dogs and plenty of humans. Try to take it to plenty of different places where it will be able to meet other dogs and realize it is not the boss.

Try doggie daycare, play dates, and dog runs. If they do tend to bite or chew, do not scream at your puppy or hit it, as this will only make poodle biting and aggression worse.


The best way to deal with poodle biting is to gift it a toy or chew. In many cases, the puppy will be teething and just look for relief from the discomfort. If it is aspiring to be bossy and bite you, make a whimpering sound so that it will know you are hurt.

You may also put its leg into its mouth so that it learns the pain of its own bite. Never permit a puppy to chew on your fingers, hand or arm.

Poodle Problems: Ending Poodle Biting in Adult Dogs

If you have an older poodle who still has a naughty poodle biting habit, make sure the dog is kept busy and is not allowed to be bored.

You must take the dominant place in the pack as the alpha leader and train the dog to do as it is ordered. Since a poodle is so intelligent, it will deeply love this and be eager to please you.

Set the poodle’s feeding times, take it on arranged walks in which you are in charge at all times, and be sure to teach it the fundamental commands, sit, stay, and release.

Allow your dog to have chew toys which are appropriate to its size and how aggressively it chews. Avoid the temptation to play tug of war with your poodle as this encourages biting and snapping and if you lose, you lose your status as the alpha in the pack.

Also avoid chasing games as this will encourage the poodle to nip as it tries to ‘herd’ you or other people, as well as children.

If these guidelines still don’t work with your poodle problems and your poodle biting trouble increases, consider taking them for specialized dog training or purchasing a detailed guide to this particular problem. You might also have a vet look at their teeth and overall behavior to see if there is a health reason for their aggressive actions or hyperactive behavior.

Poodle biting is never appropriate in any poodle no matter what its age and is one of the most poodle problems out there. If it is not dealt with while the poodle is still a puppy it can soon become a big and even dangerous problem that will need professional intervention straight away.
