Stop puppy From jumping - Teaching Puppies to Stay “Off”

December 06, 2017
Most puppies are just full of energy. They have a tendency to just bounce about the house in a cute manner. However, when a puppy starts jumping up on you and others, it may start out as cute but may turn into a nuisance later on.

One reason is that puppies don’t stay puppies for very long. You might find a little puppy jumping up on you cute, but when a 50lb dog does it, it can be dangerous. For this reason, it is best to stop puppy jumping right when it starts.

Generally, there are reasons why a puppy is jumping. It is important to try to determine those reasons so that you can find ways to discourage them. Most of the time a puppy jumps to get attention. If you have been gone, they jump on you and around when you return because they are excited to see you return. When this happens the best way to stop puppy jumping is to ignore them. It may be difficult, but simply ignore the puppy and sometimes they will get bored and wander off.

If the puppy is more persistent and you are able, turn your back on the animal and say nothing until they stop. The important thing is not to reward the jumping behavior with your attention, good or bad. Wait until the puppy has stopped jumping and then reward that.

Another effective way to stop puppy jumping is to start teaching the “off” command. When a puppy is jumping on you, say the word “Off” before turning your back on them. When they have calmed down a bit, you can then turn back around and if the puppy stays down, then reward him with a small treat and/or lots of praise. If he jumps again, turn back around and say “Off” again. It does require some time, but they do catch on.

A lot of puppies are overly excited. They are like young children who have a lot of uncontrolled energy. One way to help stop puppy jumping is to make sure they get lots of good quality exercise.

Playtime with you and walks with you all serve to give them the attention they need while burning off the surplus energy they seem to have. It is better for you to decide how to give them the attention they are so desperately “jumping” around for than leaving it to them to decide and coming up with inappropriate answers.
