Stopping Puppy Chewing - Different Techniques to Control the Chewing

December 06, 2017
When one first brings home a new puppy they can almost always expect some degree of chewing. For one thing, puppies are generally either going through or have just completed the teething stage of their life and just like a human baby chewing plays a large role in that. However, some puppies seem to stay at this stage for much longer than normal. This can leave many pet parents trying to find ways of stopping puppy chewing.

One of the best ways of stopping puppy chewing is through elimination. Eliminate the items that the puppy likes to chew on. Don’t leave shoes, children’s toys, cards, books, or whatever else might interest the puppy down and out where they can get to it.

This can be difficult to do, but once you take responsibility for the fact that if you leave it out and lose it, it is your fault then it becomes a bit easier to do. By remembering that a puppy is in many ways just like a baby, you will realize you just can’t leave things out as it isn’t safe for the puppy or the item.

Another action that can help in stopping puppy chewing is giving him toys that are fun to chew on. Watch them with the toys they have, what do they like? Do they enjoy the feel of cloth, fur or such from stuffed animals or do they prefer the natural tastes of rawhide or even bones?

Figure out what they seem to favor and get those types of chew toys for them. If you are gone for long periods of time and the puppy is left at home, get some of the toys that you reserve for those occasions only. This makes the toy seem new and can spark new interest in not only the treats inside but the toy itself.

One of the most obvious ways to help in stopping puppy chewing is to make sure they are getting the physical exercise they need. Take the puppy on walks that allow him time to explore and investigate the world around him. Puppies are curious about things and if you direct where they can explore then you can help stop them from exploring things you would rather they didn’t.

It may also be that you need to keep your pet in a crate while you are away from home. This makes for a safe environment where the puppy has only the toys and things you wish for him to have while you are out. In some cases, it is the best solution.

  1. Woah! I'm really loving the template/theme of this website. It's simple, yet effective. A lot of times it's difficult to get that "perfect balance" between usability and visual appearance. I must say you have done a amazing job with this. Additionally, the blog loads very fast for me on Opera. Exceptional Blog! gmail.com login
